My News

The My News portlet uses a syndication technology known as RSS to display headlines, along with their corresponding summaries, from a variety of publicly-available news feeds.  Many websites now support RSS syndication of ther content.  OfficeClip's RSS feed implementation allows you to view a selected news feed's current "headlines," which you can click to open a window that takes you to the story from the main site on which the feed is based.  OfficeClip provides a few feeds to get you started, but you can add more.  Directories of RSS feeds can be found at http://www.newsisfree.com/  and http://www.syndic8.com.  RSS feeds are also found on sites that contain the  button.  To get the URL of the feed behind the orange button, right click on the button the button and select  "Copy Target".  You can then enter the feed using the instructions in step 3, below.

  1. To view one of the news feeds in the portlet, click the name of the feed.

  2. You will be taken to the main feed page.  All the newsfeeds that are available are listed on the left under Feed Name.   The contents of the selected feed are displayed on the right.  Clicking the name of the feed retrieves the contents of the feed and displays it on the page.  Clicking the title of the feed results opens a new window and displays the web page of the item that the title points to.

  3. To add or edit your newsfeeds, click the Edit link under the news feed list or the Update button in the My News portlet.  This will take you to the News Feed configuration screen. To edit an existing feed, click the Edit link on the row of the feed you wish to edit.  Once finished, click Update.  To delete a news feed, click the Delete link.  Clicking the Add More button inserts a new row in which to add a new feed.   Please note that the RSS Content URL is not the URL of a web page, but a URL of an RSS file (please see above).   The Is Active? checkbox will cause the feed to be listed on the main feed page.  Checking the Is Portlet? checkbox will enable the feed name to be shown in the portlet.  Both checkboxes must be checked in order for the feed name to show in the portlet.
